Welcome to my garden! My name is Marie Ann Robinson and I live on a beautiful prairie in South Dakota. I grow all my own flowers in my gardens or wild harvest some from the fields around our home. I have been pressing and designing with pressed flowers since 1992. In the last several years I have learned more about this old Victorian art form from a guild I belong to on the web...World Wide Pressed Flower Guild. And, more recently, I have been studying the techniques of Japanese and Russian pressed flower artists. You will find one result of my study in the piece titled 'Twilight'. This was done under the direction of Russian artist/author Luidmila Beletskaya with whom I have been communicating.
I used to sell mostly at fall craft shows in South Dakota but now my goals have changed. I recently started exhibiting at art shows and I am now looking for galleries that would be interested in displaying my art.
If you are inspired to try pressed flower art for yourself or your group I am available to teach classes or do presentations. I have taught many classes to 4H groups, Extension groups and many types of clubs. My cost per student is very reasonable. Please email me at the address listed below for costs.
I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you. (To view my art please click on the 'Services' tab above.) Are you ready to 'take a walk'?

SOUTH DAKOTA MAGAZINE ARTICLE
My friends at the Clark Flower and Gift Shop in Clark, SD, where I used to work contacted the magazine (they sell it in their shop) and told them about my work. Katie Hunhoff at the magazine contacted me about doing this article...needless to say, I was thrilled! It's in the May/June 2010 issue.
Thanks so much, Linda and Melony, for doing this for me. Your support has given me so much encouragement!
PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW - 2010 AWARDS
This year I sent in two entries to the Philadelphia International Flower Show, held February 28 - March 7, 2010. The theme for this year's show was 'Passport to the World.' I am very happy with how they did! This one took the 3rd Place Ribbon in its category:
The sky is made from delphinium petals. The faces and rocks are made of the underside of the leaf from the white poplar tree and gray backed thistle and weeds from our rural property. Japanese painted fern pieces were used to make the trees.
This one took the 1st Place Ribbon in its category:

The walls and floor are made from day lily leaves that I picked in the fall after they were brown and dried. The black in the window is made from petals of a very dark burgundy hollyhock that presses almost black. The white window frame and window box are made from the underside of the leaf from the white poplar. The gray in the watering can is from this same tree but the leaf is younger. The gloves are made of fall leaves. The window box contains oregano blooms, white alyssum, purple candytuft and the vines are creeping thyme with bachelor button petals.
PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW - 2009 AWARD
My 'Italian Plate' entry in the Philadelphia Flower Show, March 1 - 8, 2009 took the first place ribbon in its class! I am thrilled! This show is the largest flower show in the US and was visited by 251,000 people this year. Next year I hope to be there to see the show as well as enter my work again. The theme this year was 'Bella Italia' and the exhibits were just amazing! The first link shows pictures taken by Kate Chu, one of the founders of our guild. To see the Pressed Plant Material artwork you will need to scroll down on Kate's blog to 'Part 1'. All of the artwork here is created entirely with pressed plant materials. Nothing is allowed to by dyed. 'Part 2 and 3' show videos of some of the other horticultural exhibits.
The second link above shows photos taken by Barbara Hallman, another member. Barbara's photos also include some very impressive competetive class entries.
The third link will take you to the official Phildelphia Flower Show blog and shows a picture of my plate as it was displayed at the show.

OTHER NEWS:
I attended the World Wide Pressed Flower Guild 2008 Conference in Anaheim, CA from June 21 to June 23...and what an inspiring conference it was! The best part was meeting all my 'petal pals' from the internet message board that we use to talk and learn from on our guild website, www.wwpfg.org. I encourage you to go to this website and click on '2008 Conference' to see all the unique and beautiful pressed flower art in all three categories. There were attendees there from the US, UK, China, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, Canada and others I am probably forgetting. And I was honored with a third place ribbon in the 'Mini Bouquet' category for my piece entitled 'Peonies in Blue Vase' (seen below). The next conference will be in 2010 in China...better start saving my pennies!
